A book for hire. Let me tell you a secret about the women who come to visit me at night. I have a long story with each of them. On the wall is a huge painting by Georgia O'Keeffe, the mother of American modernism, who was confined to the role of a woman by her lover, so she fled to the desert to paint, until her death in 1986.
In my library is a master's thesis that connects me to the Austrian poet and novelist Ingeborg Bachmann, who died in a fire in 1972 at the age of 47 in her cottage in Italy. Also in the library are novels by the Egyptian writer Qut al-Qulub al-Damardashiyya, whose life was turned upside down from princess to hunted woman because of her lover's defiance of Nasser, and who was murdered by her son in Rome in 1968. They come to my house in the evening, brimming with a strong desire to tell stories. Their lovers, friends, and husbands come with them. Their lives intertwine with mine, and they become some of my closest friends. We become one world, where the question of what brought us together becomes meaningful.
