The Adelaide University Philosophy Society (formerly the University of Adelaide Philosophy Club) is the home of student-run philosophy at Adelaide University.Philosophy has been taught in Adelaide since the founding of the University of Adelaide in 1874. It was the third university established in Australia, yet it was home to the country's first endowed professorship to bear the name of philosophy. For over 150 years, students have gathered alongside the discipline to argue, question and think together.The Society carries on that tradition. With activity traced to at least 1929, it is the oldest university philosophy society still active in Australia, long serving as a valuable adjunct to formal teaching. It brings together students, staff and members of the public who share an interest in philosophical questions, and serves as a link between the student body, the Discipline of Philosophy and the wider intellectual life of the university.Today the Society continues through public lectures, reading groups, debates, forums, social events and more.No background in philosophy is required, only a willingness to think carefully, argue in good faith, and extend respect and dignity to every open mind.Follow us on social media for upcoming events and updates.
